With drier spring weather here, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is urging everyone heading outdoors to be mindful of wildfire risk.
Last year, NIFRS attended 95 wildfire incidents, 83% caused by deliberate ignition and with 93 of those occurring between March and May.
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has issued a Yellow Wildfire Alert that will remain in place across all areas containing dead grasses, gorse, and heather until September, reflecting the elevated seasonal risk.
To protect the countryside you love to explore, please avoid lighting open fires, only use barbecues in designated areas and never leave them unattended, and take all litter home.
If you spot a fire, call 999 immediately and don’t assume someone else has already done so. The Mournes are a particular concern — recent fires there have threatened rare habitats, wildlife, livestock, and the local water supply. A little care goes a long way in keeping our trails and wild places safe for everyone.
